A bedspread is the one bed cover defined by its measurements rather than its fabric: it has to clear the floor on three sides and still have enough length left to fold over the pillows. We ranked these on drop depth first, then fabric weight, then how the edges are finished — because a spread that hangs six inches short of the carpet is just an expensive coverlet.

The drop measurement that decides everything

Take a tape measure from the top of your mattress straight down to the floor before you shop. On a queen mattress 60 inches wide, a 102-inch spread gives you (102 − 60) ÷ 2 = 21 inches per side. That reaches the floor on a 12- to 14-inch mattress sitting on a low platform frame. Put the same mattress on a box spring and a standard frame and the measurement jumps to roughly 28 to 32 inches, and a 102-inch spread leaves a visible gap.

Length works the same way. A 118-inch spread on an 80-inch queen mattress leaves 38 inches: about 20 inches of foot drop and 18 inches to fold back over standard pillows. What is the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet?

Length. A bedspread is cut to reach the floor on three sides and is long enough to fold over the pillows, usually 110 to 120 inches long. A coverlet stops a few inches below the mattress, around 15 to 18 inches of drop, and is meant to be layered over a bed skirt or a made bed.

Do bedspreads still work on a modern deep mattress?

Only if you measure first. A queen bedspread 102 inches wide gives 21 inches of drop per side. A 14-inch mattress on a low platform measures about 20 to 22 inches from the mattress top to the floor, so it works. A 14-inch mattress on a box spring and frame measures 28 to 32 inches, and the spread will hang short by six to ten inches.

Can you machine wash a bedspread at home?
