The definitions that matter
A comforter is a finished, one-piece filled blanket. What you see is what goes on the bed and — eventually — into the wash.
A duvet is a two-part system: a plain filled insert plus a removable, washable cover. You launder the cover weekly like a sheet; the insert only needs cleaning a couple of times a year.

Cost over five years
The duvet system costs more up front (insert + 2 covers) but usually less over time: covers absorb all the wear and cost little to replace, while a quality insert lasts a decade. A comforter concentrates all wear in one item — when it fades or flattens, you replace the whole thing. Heavy washers and pet owners hit that point in 2–3 years.
The hybrid nobody tells you about
