Comforter buying guide

Seven checks, ordered by how much they change the outcome. A comforter spends its life hidden inside a cover, so the spec sheet — not the styled photo — decides whether you overheat, freeze, or replace it in two winters.

1. Fill type

Four fills cover almost everything sold. Down (goose or duck cluster) has the best warmth-to-weight ratio of anything on the market and lasts 10–20 years if you keep it in a cover and wash it rarely. Down alternative is polyester — either loose siliconized microfiber or gel-coated staple fiber. It is machine washable, costs a third as much, and compacts into flat patches somewhere between year three and year six. Wool regulates moisture well but weighs roughly twice as much for the same warmth. Silk drapes flatter than everything else and suits people who hate loft. 2. Fill power (down only)

Fill power is the number of cubic inches one ounce of down expands to fill. It measures loft per ounce, not warmth. Useful bands: 550 is good, 600–700 is very good, 700–800 is excellent, and 800+ is specialty gear you rarely need indoors. Below 550 you are usually buying immature clusters padded with crushed feather, which flattens fast and pokes quills through the shell. 3. Fill weight — the number that actually sets warmth

Fill weight is the ounces of down or fiber inside. This is the warmth spec. On a queen: 20–30 oz is summer, 35–45 oz is all-season, 50 oz and up is winter. Down-alternative makers usually quote fill GSM instead: roughly 200–250 GSM for summer, 300 GSM all-season, 350–400+ GSM for winter. If a listing publishes neither ounces nor fill GSM, assume it is a summer weight sold at an all-season price.

4. Construction & baffles

Sewn-through construction stitches the top and bottom shells directly together. It is cheap, stable, and creates a cold line at every seam — acceptable for summer weights and most polyester fills. Baffle-box construction inserts fabric walls 1–2 inches tall between the shells, giving the fill room to reach full loft with no compressed seams. Any down comforter above about 35 oz needs baffles to be worth the price. Look for boxes in the 8–14 inch range; much larger and the fill migrates within the box overnight. Compare the two directly in baffle box vs. sewn-through. Separately: count corner loops. Four is the minimum, eight (corners plus mid-sides) is what a queen or king needs to stay put inside a cover.

5. Shell fabric

Down needs a down-proof shell — a tightly woven cotton cambric or percale, typically 230–400 thread count, sometimes calendered under pressure to close the weave further. Microfiber shells cost less and breathe noticeably worse, which is why so many budget comforters sleep hot regardless of fill weight. Piped edges outlast simple turned hems by years.

6. Size & drape

Standard comforter sizes: Twin 68×90, Full/Queen 90×90, Queen 90×92, King 104×92, Cal King 104×98, with oversized king running to 120×120. If the comforter goes inside a duvet cover, match the insert to the cover within about 2 inches, not to the mattress. If you sleep under it bare, measure your mattress height first — a 90 inch comforter on a 60 inch queen leaves 15 inches per side, which a 14 inch mattress consumes almost entirely.

7. Certifications & budget tiers

For down, RDS (Responsible Down Standard) covers bird welfare and traceability, not warmth or cleanliness. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers harmful-substance testing on the finished product. Red flags

  • No fill weight anywhere on the page. The single most common omission, and always in the buyer's disfavor.
  • "Goose down" with no fill power stated. Undisclosed fill power is almost never above 550.
  • Sewn-through construction sold as a winter weight. The seams undo the fill.
  • Thread counts above 600 on the shell. Ply-counted marketing, and heavier than it needs to be.
  • Zero corner loops. The insert will migrate to the foot of the cover within a week.
  • "Hypoallergenic down" with no cleanliness or turbidity spec. Reactions come from residual dust in poorly washed down, not the cluster itself.
  • Dry-clean-only on a down comforter. Solvents strip the natural oils that keep clusters resilient.
