Egyptian vs. Pima cotton

Both names promise the same physical property, and both are printed on bedding that does not have it. The useful question is not which is better — it is which claim you can verify.
The definitions
Cotton quality is set mostly by staple length: how long an individual fiber is before it is spun into yarn. Standard upland cotton, roughly 90% of the world crop, runs about 0.9–1.1 inches. Long-staple runs 1.25–1.4 inches. Extra-long-staple (ELS) runs 1.4–1.6 inches and above.
Egyptian cotton is a geographic term. Grown in the Nile Delta, the historic ELS varieties (Giza 45, Giza 87, Giza 88) genuinely reach 1.4–1.6 inches. But Egypt also grows ordinary upland cotton, and "Egyptian cotton" on a label is not a protected or tested claim in most markets.
Pima cotton names a plant variety — Gossypium barbadense — grown mainly in the American Southwest, Peru, and Australia, with staples of 1.4–1.6 inches. It is the same species as the Egyptian Giza varieties.
Supima is the one with teeth: a registered trademark licensed only to mills using American-grown Pima, backed by DNA testing on finished fabric. It is a supply-chain guarantee, not a different plant.

What staple length actually does
A yarn is a bundle of fibers twisted together. Short fibers need many overlaps along a given length of yarn, and every overlap leaves an end sticking out of the surface. Long fibers need fewer, so fewer ends protrude.
That single mechanism explains everything people like about ELS cotton. Fewer protruding ends means a smoother hand out of the package. It means less visible fuzz after twenty washes. Above all, it means less pilling, because a pill is nothing more than broken surface ends tangling into a ball under abrasion — no loose ends, no pills. Longer fibers also spin into finer, stronger yarn, which is how a genuine 400 TC sateen stays light instead of turning into canvas.
What ELS does not do is make the fabric cooler, warmer, or crisper. Those come from the weave. Read percale vs. sateen before you spend a dollar on fiber pedigree — a 300 TC upland percale sleeps cooler than a 500 TC Supima sateen every night of the year.
The verification problem
Independent testing over the past decade has repeatedly found that a large share of bedding labeled Egyptian cotton contains little or none. The reason is structural: "Egyptian" describes a place, no licensing body polices its use on retail packaging, and Egypt's ELS output is a small fraction of the volume sold under that name worldwide.
Practical filters for a listing:
- A named cultivar (Giza 45, Giza 87, Giza 88) is a real claim. Bare "Egyptian cotton" is not.
- The Supima trademark, with a license number, is the strongest verification available at retail.
- "100% cotton" with a stated single-ply construction and a sane thread count beats an unverifiable pedigree.

Certifications answer different questions. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished textile for harmful substances and says nothing about fiber length or origin. Thread count, and the trap
The 1,000-thread-count Egyptian cotton listing at $40 is the most common bedding scam. The number is produced by counting plies: a yarn twisted from three thin strands gets counted three times, so a genuine 300 TC fabric is advertised at 900. Verdict
Supima wins for anyone who wants proof. If the label carries the trademark, you are getting American ELS Pima at 1.4 inches or better, and the pilling resistance is real. Expect $90–$160 for a queen cover.
