Most people assume Cal king means bigger. It means rotated: four inches taken off the width and handed to the length, for sleepers over about 6'2" and for narrow rooms that cannot take 76" across.

The drop math, worked out
Width first:
(104" cover − 72" mattress) ÷ 2 = 16" of drop per side.
Because the mattress is 4" narrower than a standard king while the cover stays 104" wide, the Cal king is the best-proportioned of the two king sizes. Subtract mattress height to see what hangs below:

Compare that to the same arithmetic on a standard king — (104 − 76) ÷ 2 = 14" per side — and the Cal king comes out two inches ahead at every mattress height. The trade is at the foot. The 98" cover over an 84" mattress leaves 14" of spare length, so about 4" folded back at the head leaves 10" at the foot, which wraps a 10" mattress and not much more. Tall mattress plus tall sleeper is the combination that runs out of fabric fastest.
Which covers fit both beds
This matters if you own two beds, or if you are buying for a guest room that changes. The swap works in exactly one direction:

So the one cover to own if you have both is the Cal king at 104×98". Six extra inches of length on a standard king is generosity, not error. Deep mattresses on a Cal king
The Cal king's extra two inches of drop buy real headroom, but a 16" pillow-top or a 14" hybrid plus a 3" topper still exhausts it. Options, cheapest first: a 15" bed skirt to cover the foundation; a comforter rather than a cover, since quilted loft carries to the edge; or an oversized cut at 110–120" wide, where (110 − 72) ÷ 2 = 19" per side and (120 − 72) ÷ 2 = 24". What to buy for a Cal king
Cal king stock is thinner than standard king stock in every fabric, and the deepest cuts in a range often skip it entirely. Buy on availability first, then fabric. Is a California king bigger than a king?
It is longer but narrower. A Cal king is 72×84" and a standard king is 76×80", so the Cal king trades 4" of width for 4" of length. Total area is almost identical, 6,080 square inches for the king against 6,048 for the Cal king.
Can I use a standard king duvet cover on a California king?
