King bed covers

Updated August 2026

A king mattress gained four inches of height over the last two decades and the standard king cover gained none. That is the whole reason a correctly labeled king can sit on a king bed looking like it belongs on a queen.

Exact dimensions

ItemDimensionsNotes
King mattress (Eastern king)76×80"38" per sleeper — the width of a twin each
King duvet cover104×92"The standard cut across nearly every brand
King comforter104×92"Quilted loft makes the same footprint read fuller
Oversized king covers110×96" to 120×120"A separate category, not a generous king
California king (for comparison)72×84"4" narrower, 4" longer

The drop math, worked out

The standard king cover on the standard king mattress:

(104" cover − 76" mattress) ÷ 2 = 14" of drop per side.

Now subtract the mattress height, which is what determines whether anything hangs below the mattress at all:

Mattress heightDrop per sideHangs below the mattressResult
9"14"5"Covers the base rail — the intended look
10"14"4"Correct
12"14"2"Tight but tidy
14"14"0"Stops exactly at the bottom edge — the shrunken look
16" pillow top14"−2"Two inches of mattress visible below the hem
14" plus a 3" topper14"−3"Sheets strain, cover fails

The 14" row is the crux. A king is proportionally worse off than a queen: the queen's standard cover gives 15" of drop against a 60" mattress, while the king gives 14" against a 76" one. Wider bed, less drop. That is why the complaint clusters at this size, and it is arithmetic rather than a manufacturing fault.

Length has the same margin as a queen: 92" of cover over an 80" mattress leaves 12" spare, so about 4" folded at the head and 8" at the foot. Enough to wrap a 10" mattress at the bottom corner, not enough for a 14" one.

When to size up to oversized

Measure the mattress, add any topper, and compare to 14". At 14" or more, standard king bedding cannot produce visible drop on the sides, and no amount of pulling will change that. Oversized cuts run from about 110×96" up to 120×120", and the same formula applies:

  • 110" wide: (110 − 76) ÷ 2 = 17" per side → 3" hanging on a 14" mattress.
  • 116" wide: (116 − 76) ÷ 2 = 20" per side → 6" hanging on a 14" mattress.
  • 120" wide: (120 − 76) ÷ 2 = 22" per side → 8" hanging on a 14" mattress, 4" on an 18" one.

The honest downsides: oversized selection is a fraction of standard king selection, it is mostly comforters rather than covers, prices run 30–60% higher, and a 120×120" comforter is a genuine problem for a domestic 4.5 cu ft washer. The full breakdown, including what actually exists to buy, is in oversized king bedding. The cheaper alternative is a bed skirt with a 15" drop plus a standard king cover, which fixes the visible gap for a fraction of the cost.

King, Cal king and split king

A standard king is 76×80" and a California king is 72×84" — narrower and longer. The fitted layers are not interchangeable, and a 92" long king cover on an 84" Cal king mattress leaves only 8" of spare length, which disappears entirely into the pillow fold. The reverse swap works better and is explained in California king bed covers. If your king is actually two twin XL mattresses on an adjustable base, the footprint is identical but the sheeting is not — see split king bedding. For the size below, the numbers are in queen bed covers, and everything sits together on the sizes hub.

What to buy for a king

Two things change at king scale. The insert has to be anchored — a king insert has 104" of width to migrate across, so four corner ties are a minimum and eight interior loops are better. And laundry becomes a constraint: a king cover needs a 4.5 cu ft drum to move freely, and washing it with anything else abrades the fabric against itself.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a standard king duvet cover?

104×92". On a 76" wide king mattress that works out to 14" of drop per side, which was designed around a 10" mattress and leaves nothing hanging on a 14" one.

Why does my king comforter look shrunken?

Because 14" of drop minus a 14" mattress equals zero. The fabric reaches the bottom edge of the mattress and stops, so the foundation, the frame and the bed skirt line are all visible. It is the most common sizing complaint at this size and it is arithmetic, not a defect.

Is a king the same as a California king?

No. A standard king is 76×80" and a California king is 72×84", so the Cal king is 4" narrower and 4" longer. Bedding is not interchangeable in the fitted layer, and a standard king cover at 92" long leaves only 8 spare inches on an 84" Cal king mattress.

When should I buy oversized king bedding instead?

When the mattress plus any topper measures 14" or more, or when the bed sits on a tall frame you want covered. A 110" wide oversized cover gives 17" per side, which leaves 3" hanging on a 14" mattress, and 120" cuts give 22" per side.
