IKEA duvet sizes in inches and centimeters

IKEA's US duvet covers and inserts use American size names, but every one of them is cut 86 inches long — shorter than any standard US cover. Twin is 64 × 86, Full/Queen is 86 × 86 and King is 102 × 86 inches. Here is what that means for fit, with the arithmetic.
1. IKEA US duvet sizes
IKEA sells duvet covers and inserts at matching dimensions, so a cover and insert bought together always fit each other. The problem starts the moment one half of the pair is from another brand. Conversions use 1 in = 2.54 cm.

Two things stand out. Every IKEA size is the same 86 inches long, so the King is only wider, never longer. And the gap to American sizing is mostly in length: an IKEA duvet on a US bed leaves less at the foot than shoppers expect. 2. What size is that cm cover?
Labels, resale listings and IKEA's own international pages quote centimeters. Match the numbers here before matching the size name.

3. Worked example: IKEA Full/Queen against a US queen
This is the combination almost everyone hits. IKEA Full/Queen is 86 × 86 in. A US queen cover is 90 × 92 in.
Width: 90 − 86 = 4 inches narrower.
Length: 92 − 86 = 6 inches shorter.
Now run both directions:
IKEA insert inside a US queen cover. The insert has 4 inches of slack across and 6 along. Untied, it migrates to one side and leaves an empty flap of fabric at the foot. With all four corners tied it is livable; without ties it is not — see how to keep a duvet from shifting.
US insert inside an IKEA cover. A US queen insert is 4 inches too wide and 6 inches too long for the bag it must fit into. It will not reach the corners flat, the closure strains, and the excess folds into a lump across the foot. Ties cannot fix an oversized insert. The exception is an 88 × 88 insert, which is only 2 inches over and compresses in acceptably.
On the mattress. An IKEA Full/Queen on a 60 inch US queen mattress: (86 − 60) ÷ 2 = 13 inches of drop per side, 2 inches less than a US queen cover gives. On a 10 inch mattress that still hangs 3 inches below the edge; on a 14 inch hybrid the fitted sheet shows. On a 54 inch full mattress the same duvet gives (86 − 54) ÷ 2 = 16 inches, which is why it is sold for both beds. Lengthwise, 86 inches over an 80 inch queen leaves 6 inches total, and several of those go under the pillows — hence the cold-feet complaint.

The rule underneath every row: an insert bigger than its cover by more than about 2 inches never works, and an insert more than about 3 inches smaller than its cover slides unless tied. That makes the direction of the mismatch the whole story: an IKEA insert can go into a US cover, but a US insert cannot go into an IKEA cover. Most IKEA covers close with hidden press studs or buttons and many have no interior corner ties, which makes retrofit duvet clips worth buying alongside.
5. IKEA sizes outside the US
IKEA in Europe, the UK and Australia sells different, metric sizes: 150 × 200 cm singles, 200 × 200 and 240 × 220 cm doubles, and 260 × 220 cm kings. A cover brought home from a European store, or bought second-hand, will not match a US IKEA insert of the same name. A 240 × 220 cm European cover is 94.5 × 86.6 in: 8.5 inches wider than IKEA US Full/Queen but the same length. Check the centimeters on the care label before assuming anything.
6. Warmth grades instead of fill weight
IKEA does not publish fill weight in ounces the way US brands do. Inserts are graded on a four-step warmth scale — roughly cool, all-round, warm and extra warm — which is a relative index across IKEA's own range, not a measurement you can compare to a 40 oz American comforter. The nearest US translation: grade 1 behaves like a 20–30 oz summer weight, grade 2 like a 35–45 oz all-season, grade 4 like a 50 oz-plus winter duvet. Fills range from polyester through duck down. 7. The buying strategy that works
- Buy both halves from the same system. IKEA insert with IKEA cover, or US insert with US cover. Mixing costs more in frustration than either purchase saved.
- If you already own the IKEA insert, a standard US full/queen cover at 90 × 90 is the closest match. Avoid oversized covers and tie every corner.
- If you already own a US insert, skip IKEA covers at every size. You cannot make a cover longer.
- Deep mattress? IKEA's 13 inches of drop will not clear a 14 inch hybrid. Size up: an IKEA King on a queen gives (102 − 60) ÷ 2 = 21 inches per side, or see oversized king bedding for a king bed.
- Check the unit before you check the name. 218, 259 and 163 cm are IKEA US; 200, 220 and 240 cm are European sizing.
Red flags
- A third-party listing titled "fits IKEA" with no dimensions. It should say 86 × 86 or 102 × 86.
- A second-hand IKEA cover quoted in 240 × 220 cm. That is a European cover, not the US Full/Queen.
- Any US cover advertised as compatible with all inserts. No single size can be.
- Duvet sets photographed on low platform beds. The drop shown will not reproduce on a deep US mattress.
